The full answer

5–8 kg), some reach 20 lb or more, and they do not finish growing until around 3 to 5 years old.

Physically, the breed was shaped by the cold New England climate: a shaggy, water-resistant coat, tufted paws and ear tips, a broad chest, and a long bushy tail they often wrap around themselves. Personality is where they really stand out. Maine Coons are sociable, confident, and usually good with children and dogs. They tend to follow their people from room to room, "help" with chores, and communicate in soft trills and chirps more than loud meows. Many play fetch, and quite a few enjoy water. They are affectionate without being clingy lap cats — most prefer sitting next to you rather than on you.

Care requirements are larger than average. Budget for a big sturdy litter box, a heavy scratching post, and enough floor space for a cat this size. Their long coat needs brushing two to three times a week to prevent mats, and more during seasonal shedding. Provide daily interactive play to keep an energetic, intelligent cat busy; puzzle feeders and cat trees help a lot.

Health-wise, Maine Coons are generally robust, but the breed has higher rates of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), hip dysplasia, and spinal muscular atrophy. Ask breeders for health screening of the parents and have your cat checked annually. Keep them indoors or in a secure enclosure — their size does not protect them from traffic.
